How Long to Dry a House After a Pipe Burst
Quick answer: Most rooms take about 3 to 5 days to dry after a burst pipe when proper dehumidifiers and air movers are used and drying starts within a day. Concrete slabs, ceilings and water that sat for days push that out to a week or more. Done is a moisture reading, not a date.
The short version
- Walls and carpet caught within 24 hours: usually 3 to 4 days.
- Water under cabinets or in wall cavities: 4 to 6 days, sometimes with holes drilled to dry inside.
- Soaked concrete slab: often a week or more.
- Ceiling below an upstairs break: 3 to 5 days once wet insulation is out.
What sets the timeline
How fast drying started. The EPA recommends drying within 24 to 48 hours. Water that sat over a weekend has soaked deeper into drywall, framing and the slab.
What got wet. Drywall dries fairly fast once air moves across it. Particleboard swells and usually comes out. Concrete is slow.
How much water. A supply line that sprayed for 10 minutes is different from one that ran all night.
Equipment. Box fans alone can stretch drying to weeks and still leave wet wall cavities. Proper structural drying uses dehumidifiers sized for the space.
Why slab homes take longer
Most Moreno Valley houses are slab-on-grade. Water that runs under carpet or laminate soaks into the concrete, and concrete gives it back slowly. Pad usually gets pulled so the slab can breathe. New flooring should only go down once the slab reads dry. The same issue shows up with slab leaks.
How you know it's actually dry
Ask for a moisture log: readings on day one, every day after, and the dry target for each material. A dry target usually comes from reading an unaffected wall or floor in the same house. When the wet areas match it, drying is done.
What you can do to help
- Keep equipment running day and night.
- Keep windows and doors closed unless the tech says otherwise. Hot inland air doesn't help a dehumidifier.
- Don't put furniture back on carpet early.
- Leave access open so readings can be taken.
Then the rebuild
Drying is mitigation. After it, drywall gets patched, textured and painted, and flooring replaced. That's often another one to three weeks, depending on materials and scheduling.
